　このたび、hakari contemporaryでは、林田真季による個展「Silent Echoes of the Cedar」を開催いたします。林田はこれまで、さまざまな社会的課題をリサーチし、主に写真を媒体とした独自のインスタレーションを展開してきました。本展では、広く「森林問題」としてグローバルに扱われる環境課題に焦点を当て、その本質が国や地域によって異なるという視点を、新作の写真インスタレーションを通して提起します。

新作インスタレーションでは、グローバルな森林問題とは方向性の異なる、利用されない人工林における生物多様性の喪失を背景に、日本で最も多く植林されているスギに焦点を当てます。スギから抽出した現像液で現像・プリントを行うという技法を取り入れながら、林田は活用されない人工林の現状に対し、写真作家の視点から向き合うことに挑戦します。

本展は、人による自然への介入とその意図せざる結果、そして本質的に多義性を内包する社会問題を一様に扱うことの危険性を示唆しています。環境課題をはじめ、倫理や道徳的価値観までもがグローバリゼーションされる現代を生きる我々が、目の前の事実を改めてローカライズし、再考する機会となる本展をぜひご高覧下さい。

We are pleased to announce the exhibition Silent Echoes of the Cedar by Maki Hayashida at hakari contemporary. Hayashida has previously explored various social issues through her research, developing unique installations primarily using photography as her medium. In this exhibition, she focuses on environmental issues that are globally discussed under the umbrella of “deforestation,” proposing the idea that their essence varies depending on the country or region, through new photographic installations.

In her new work, Hayashida focuses on Japanese cedar, the most widely planted tree across the country , set against the backdrop of the loss of biodiversity in unused artificial forests—a direction that contrasts with the global concerns of over-logging. She uses a technique of developing and printing photographs with a photographic solution extracted from cedar, challenging herself to confront the current state of unused artificial forests from the perspective of an artist using photography.

This body of work as an installation suggests the danger of uniformly addressing issues related to human intervention in nature, unintended consequences, and socially complex problems that inherently contain multiple meanings. In an era where environmental issues, ethics, and moral values are increasingly globalized, this exhibition offers an opportunity for us to reconsider and localize the facts confronting us. 林田真季
Maki Hayashida

1984年大阪生まれ、東京を拠点に活動。東京を拠点とするビジュアル・アーティスト。2023年ロンドン芸術大学ロンドン・カレッジ・オブ・コミュニケーション MA Photography 修了。写真というメディアとその様々な形態に興味を持ち、デジタルとアナログ両方のプロセスを試しながら、社会を反映する現代アートとしての写真に挑戦する。また、写真と環境の相反する関係を落とし込むことによって、デジタル時代における写真メディアの物質性と複製性を問いかける。主な展覧会に「第17回shiseido art egg」（資生堂ギャラリー、東京、2024年）、「KYOTOGRAPHIE 京都国際写真祭『KG+SELECT』」（2021年）など。主な受賞歴に「アルル国際写真フェスティバル LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award」入選（2023年）、「シンガポール国際写真フェスティバル Dummy Book Award」グランプリ（2020年）など。

Maki Hayashida (b.1984, Japan) is a Tokyo-based artist who uses photography as a means to challenge visual representation within her research-based practice towards ecological and social issues. Mainly concerned with the relationship between consumer activity and nature, her work reflects photography’s ambivalent relationship with the environment, simultaneously exploring the materiality and reproducibility of this media in the digital age.

By completing her MA in Photography at London College of Communication in 2023, her practice has expanded into installation-based work from bookmaking. In doing so, she is aiming to provoke deeper thinking towards our surrounding world.

She has been shortlisted for the LUMA Rencontres Dummy Book Award (2023) as well as awarded the Grand Prix at Dummy Book Award of Singapore International Photography Festival (2020). Her work has been exhibited internationally and domestically, including FORMAT International Photography Festival (2019), and KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival KG+SELECT (2021). She was awarded the 17th ‘shiseido art egg’ and presented a solo exhibition at the Shiseido Gallery, Tokyo (2024).
