Hakari Contemporary is pleased to present “Suspended Samsara,” a solo exhibition by Koshiro Shikine.
Working across multiple media, including video, sculpture, and performance, Shikine has developed a practice that reconstructs events and bodily experiences in order to reconsider the nature of perception. In these works, where fragmented events, situations reduced to their outcomes, and moments that seem about to happen yet never quite occur intersect, quietly unsettle the assumptions and values that unconsciously shape the way we perceive the world.
This exhibition, “Suspended Samsara,” is based on the exhibition of the same title held at Kanda & Oliveira in Funabashi, Chiba, a gallery focusing on contemporary art, with independent curator Manami Totsuka.
Reconfigured for the space of Hakari Contemporary, the exhibition introduces new elements, including performance.
Through Shikine’ s practice, this exhibition presents questions surrounding time, the body, and perception as states that emerge between space and time.
We warmly invite you to experience the exhibition.

The World, in Suspense
The emotions and bodily sensations latent within everyday life are experienced as something natural, and yet they are deeply shaped by social and structural forms. This exhibition, Suspended Samsara, is an attempt to render perceptible the dynamics of that organization through the temporal, material, and bodily experiences articulated by the works on view.
Drawing on the following three perspectives, the exhibition reconsiders and presents the unstable conditions through which we perceive the world, experience time, and situate sensation and the body within social forms.
First, what constitutes the transformation of perception?
This inquiry addresses the present coordinates of perception as epitomized by contemporary social media: the hollowing out of perception induced by speed, fragmentation, and repetition.
Second, what is the nature of the time we experience?
This concerns discontinuity and persistence along the axis of time, and the bodily sensations that accompany them.
Third, how might one deviate from social circuits?
This addresses a paradoxical “clarity” that emerges within a contemporary moment of uncertainty and chaos, in an age marked by successive wars.
Coffee spills—and from this phenomenon, only the “result” is extracted, while the context behind it is stripped away. In video, the time that “seems about to happen, yet does not” is stretched out; in sculpture, only the result of “what has already happened” is fixed in place.
These exceptional works hold in abeyance the values of what “ought to be,” brought into relief through a state of suspension, and clearly reveal the possibility of alternative modes of thought. By unraveling the idealism of “how things should be,” they open the possibility of different ways of thinking, becoming, each in its own way, a lesson for thinking once again.
The world, suspended—even now.

Shikine is a Tokyo-based artist.
After graduating with a degree in Sculpture from Tokyo University of the Arts, he completed his master’s degree in the Global Art Practice program at the same university. Working across video, sculpture, and performance, he reconstructs fragments of everyday life and physical experiences to generate spaces that induce perceptual transformation. His practice focuses on the state of “suspension” that occurs between physical sensation and social circuits in contemporary environments, the gaps between recording and memory, and reality and reproduction, as well as the relationship between the gaze and institutional systems surrounding the body.
Recent exhibitions include “Sushi, Shisu” (2025, Ryugasaki City). His honors include the Tomoko Yabumae Jury Award at the CAF Award 2019.
