Hakari Contemporary is pleased to participate in the Expanded Section of ART OSAKA 2026.

For this presentation, Hakari Contemporary introduces Keito Mitoma, who completed the MFA program at Kyoto City University of Arts in 2026. The presentation centers on the artist’s new work, “odoriko series / this spot 2.”

We warmly invite you to visit and experience the work.

《odoriko series / this spot 2》

odoriko series / this spot 2

This presentation is structured around a video work in homage to Dancer (1938) by the painter Ryōhei Koiso. Behind the stage that draws the gaze of spectators, a green-faced dancer sits quietly, returning the looks directed toward her.

Stillness and movement, front and back, subject and object, earnestness and humor—these elements continuously shift and overlap, refusing to settle into a single meaning.

Born in Hyogo, Japan, in 2001.
Received an MFA from Kyoto City University of Arts in 2026.

Keito Mitoma has developed her works using expressive techniques, including photography, video, objects, and performance. The constituent elements of her works are not fixed, ranging from existing products and information to natural objects, drawings, and even the artist herself. Underlying her expressions, derived from these diverse elements, is a state where two opposing things coexist – such as “stillness and motion” or “subject and object.” This tense relationship is gently thrown off balance by a humorous and light-hearted manipulation, yet the surface meaning remains suspended, halting the viewer’s comprehension. When faced with her works, our unconscious perspectives about “artistry” or the “correct way to read” are gently shaken. She seeks to reexamine the very nature of “art” itself through the confusion and discomfort that arise when meaning is suspended, with a subtle irony.
